Developing the Common Good Curriculum
As part of the implementation of the Strategy for Learning, the University has developed a model to support, recognise and embed the Common Good within the curriculum and the wider student experience as part of its core mission. The learning experience at GCU will prepare students to develop four ‘Common Good attributes’:
Active and global citizenship, Entrepreneurial mind-set Responsible leadership Confidence (see Appendix for more detailed definitions of all four attributes)GCU students will develop the Common Good attributes through their formal taught curriculum. The Common Good Curriculum will also provide opportunities for students to enhance and develop these attributes further through engaging in co- and extra-curricular activities aligned to the Common Good – for example, social innovation, community engagement and volunteering. The enhancement of these attributes through co- and extra-curricular activities will be signposted to students through The Common Good Opportunities pages.
What is the aim of this mapping process?

This mapping tool aims to assist Schools, professional support departments and the Students’ Association to highlight existing opportunities for students to engage in co- and extra-curricular activities that support the development of Common Good attributes and allow students to make a positive difference to the communities that we serve.
The opportunities identified may be restricted to students in particular Schools or on particular programmes or levels of study, or they may be open to all students across the University. Collectively they form the Common Good Opportunities pages which are used to make a wide range of co- and extra-curricular opportunities visible to students, staff and external audiences such as employers.
To allow the pages to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible, we would appreciate you taking the time to complete the following template with a brief overview of each relevant co- and/or extra-curricular activity within your area of work. This will be included in the online pages. We appreciate that the activity may not explicitly aim to enable the development of Common Good attributes, but please consider whether the approaches taken and the behaviours developed by participating students meet their criteria. Please note that the mapping process will focus specifically on activities that can be accessed through or at GCU; it will not include activities that individual students undertake independent of the University .

The Global Buddies Programme aims to provide a friendly welcome for new international students, helping them to settle into life in Scotland. On the Support Stream, new international students can apply to be matched with a Senior Global Buddy, a welcoming face and someone they can go to for help and advice. Buddies are matched based on common interests like sports, movies or outdoor activities. As a Senior Global Buddy you’ll support a small group of international students through their first term in the UK. Senior Global Buddies are expected to:

Supporting and interacting with diverse individuals will enhance their intercultural skills alongside other valuable transferable skills such as communication, initiative, and building relationships. Students can also request a LinkedIn Recommendation, all whilst making friends from around the world. We will also be presenting the Global Buddy Award to the Senior Global Buddy who goes above and beyond and receive a gift voucher.
