Student Mentors (Caledonian Club)
Student Mentors with the Caledonian Club work with young people and their families to raise life-long learning aspirations, build key life skills and provide unique learning opportunities.
Involvement in the scheme gives the opportunity to develop the following Common Good attributes:
- Active and global citizenship
- Confidence
- Responsible leadership
What’s involved?
The Caledonian Club is GCU’s multi-award-winning widening participation and community engagement initiative. We work with children and young people, from three to 18 years old, in communities in Glasgow and London, delivering a range of project-based activities in school and on campus.
The Caledonian Club employs GCU students as Mentors to participate in these activities. Our Student Mentors are the heart and soul of the club, supporting all activities alongside University staff.
How will participating in this activity/opportunity allow students to make a positive difference in the communities that we serve?
We work with young people from nursery age through all school stages and their families to raise life-long learning aspirations and equip members with key life skills. We achieve this by offering targeted nursery, primary and secondary schools a linked set of activities delivered by staff and student mentors from GCU.
What are the benefits of taking part in this activity/opportunity for participating students?
The Caledonian Club employs GCU students as Mentors to take part in the activities. Not only does this allow students to earn money in a flexible part-time job, but it also allows them to fulfil a role as active citizens, develop skills to improve future employment prospects and meet and work with other GCU students from a variety of disciplines. Mentors are also eligible to join the GCU Student Leaders Programme.
