Pitch-side first aid
Students studying physiotherapy pre-registration courses can support Students’ Association sports clubs with pitch-side first aid, which also allows them to develop their practice skills within a specialised field.
Those involved will have the opportunity to develop the following Common Good attributes:
- Active and global citizenship
- Confidence
- Entrepreneurial mindset
- Responsible leadership
What’s involved?
Supporting Students’ Association sports clubs with pitch-side first aid allows students to develop their practice skills within a specialised field. Students attend matches (mainly football, rugby and hockey) to provide first-responder duties during and immediately after the event and refer on for assessment and management where appropriate. They are also able to tie these duties in with volunteering at the Caledonian Clinic, where they may be able to continue the management of any individuals they have referred for assessment.
How will participating in this activity/opportunity allow students to make a positive difference in the communities that we serve?
This activity is mainly aimed at supporting the GCU Students’ Association community. However, by developing transferable skills and confidence in this (sometimes stressful) environment, students can also make a positive impact at external sports clubs within the local community in Glasgow and beyond. The early assessment and management of sports injuries can not only prevent injuries from deteriorating but can be life-saving. Prompt referral-on to the appropriate practitioner is encouraged.
What are the benefits of taking part in this activity/opportunity for participating students?
Students who get involved in working with sports teams gain confidence in their knowledge and skills and gain valuable exposure to real-life situations where their basic first aid, problem-solving and decision-making can make a real impact. Students gain clinical, organisational and communication skills, and have the opportunity to develop a network of friends and colleagues working in this field.
