Out and About Safety

Avoid walking around (particularly crossing the road) on your mobile or with earphones plugged in, as this can distract you.
Be careful where you keep your valuables (keys, money, phone, tablets). Don’t keep them in your jacket or back trouser pocket, or in a bag that is slung over your back.
Don’t walk around with lots of cash, only carry as much as you need. If you are using an ATM, remember the following:
- Don’t use it if you feel unsafe for any reason (eg. badly lit space, someone watching)
- Memorise your PIN (don’t write it down), and don’t let anyone see you type it in.
- Try and avoid withdrawing lots of cash at once; only as much as you’ll immediately need. Once you have your cash, put it safely in your wallet/purse straight away; don’t let others see it.
- Ensure you stay at the machine long enough to get everything that it gives you (card, cash, any receipts).
At Night/Socialising
If you are going out, be sure to tell someone (eg. a friend, flatmate) where you are going, who you’ll be with, and when you are likely to be back.
Save a local taxi company's number in your mobile phone and take enough money for a taxi home. The University also has a 'Get Home Safe' scheme with Glasgow Taxis.
If you see a violent incident, do not get involved. Inform the police immediately on 999.
Avoid walking home alone. You should always be with a friend, and ideally you should take a taxi or night bus. Avoid parks and any other areas with dull lighting.
Do not take shortcuts at night; always walk where there are plenty of other people and where the area is well-lit.
If you are getting into a taxi, make sure it is a licensed one. If you are unsure, do not get in. Ensure the taxi takes you right to your door, and have your keys ready as you leave it.
