European Project Semester sees student present project at university at Nile University
A GCU student has had the unique opportunity to present to a company in Egypt as part of an intercultural project.
Electrical Power Engineering student John Martin took part in the European Project Semester, a project-based programme which sees students from European universities work together on an engineering task set by real-life companies.
During the project, John had the chance to work with students from Nile University who were initially planning on visiting the Glasgow Caledonian campus; however VISA issues stopped this from happening. After the project concluded virtually, the students had the chance to present their findings at the Nile University in Cairo.
The presentation was given during the Undergraduate Research Forum; an event designed to showcase the research work of Undergraduate students from the whole of Egypt. John had the opportunity to present his findings alongside Nile University students Omar Ahmed and Mo'men Shekep.
The project, which was set by TÜV SÜD; a National Engineering Laboratory based in East Kilbride which uses technology to measure the flow of fluids including oil, gas and water.
John explained: “Due to the rise in energy prices, they asked our group to review and come up with some way of saving energy within a small server room based in their facility. This involved doing site surveys using thermal image cameras, a lot of research and using various software to simulate our ideas before presenting them to the company.”
John described the experience as a project as an experience like no other and would recommend that future students take part if they have the chance. He said: “It was an excellent experience, I would highly recommend participating in any similar projects. The knowledge gained working with multi-disciplinary teams allows for a totally different experience to any other project I have undertaken during my time at university.”
