Friendly atmosphere at GCU Feud event
A student-led event held on campus has helped build on GCU’s sense of community.
MSc International Tourism and Events Management students led on GCU Feud, an evening of entertainment held at the GCU Students’ Association’s Reunion Bar on the 17th of April.
Students from the University’s three academic schools, SHLS, GSBS and SCEBE, faced a variety of general knowledge questions to help raise funds for Kilbryde Hospice, a specialist palliative care charity.
The event was hosted by Missy Olowookere and organised by a five-person team as part of their Events Management Module.
“We wanted to do something that would bring people of different backgrounds together,” explained Missy.
“We didn’t want it just to be an African theme, we wanted something more diverse. We had asked around campus to see what students would be interested in, and they basically said something fun - that’s why we thought of doing a game event.
“I think some people from the UK haven’t actually heard of Family Feud, they only know Family Fortunes, but it’s basically the same thing. When you see the guy who presents it, Steve Harvey, you will probably recognise him! It’s also very popular in South Africa and Nigeria, where I’m from.”
A total of 16 students helped form four teams representing the “families” of Engineering, Psychology, Social Sciences and Accountancy.
Missy said: “The fact there was representation from different areas of the University meant that we could bring people together, which was the overall aim.
“The Engineering boys were crowned the winners – they definitely deserved it! I was the quizmaster and we had a projector where the game was playing. Each participant had to guess the answer and the answer had to be on the board – thankfully there were a lot of general knowledge questions on Google!”
She added: “We raised £265 for the charity, which was fantastic. We are very proud because it can be challenging getting students to attend events overall, especially when we live in difficult financial times.”
Missy has been inspired by her involvement in GCU Feud and the positive feedback received post-event.
“We sent out an online feedback form immediately after the event and the response we got showed that everyone enjoyed it. Many of the participants said they would like to get involved in something similar in the future.
“This is the first event I’ve organised in Scotland and it has definitely boosted my confidence overall. I obviously felt nervous before it but I had great support from my team and my lecturers.”
