GCU society hosts Battle for Glasgow tournament for a second year
A student society has been busy preparing for an annual Esports event, which will take place on campus at the weekend.
The Caledonian Chargers are set to take part in the Battle For Glasgow Esports tournament, which sees three Glasgow universities battle it out to determine the best Esports society.
The tournament, which will take place from the 26th-28th of May, challenges the Glasgow Caledonian University Esports Society, the University of Glasgow’s ‘Glasgow Grizzlies’ and the University of Strathclyde ‘Strathers’ go head-to-head in a series of games in a competitive gaming competition.
Behind the event is a team of multidisciplinary students, ranging from events, media, marketing and audio support. Organising the event for its second year, the team wanted to ensure that they had plenty of time to prepare the anticipated event.
Amongst the team of students is International Tourism and Events Management student Will Vogt, who had the opportunity to use his events expertise to support the three-day event. He explained: “It’s an Esports event, which is a tournament between the three Glasgow universities. For some background, this is actually the sixth tournament to have taken place and it’s GCU’s second time hosting it on campus.
It’s based on the rivalry between the three university societies and it’s a chance to battle it out. There is going to be a live audience and it will be getting streamed online, so we want everyone to have a good time and enjoy the event.”
He added: “There will be six games playing at different times throughout the three days; two games per day and three sections per game. Some games will be formatted as best of one, best of three and then best of seven.”
Unlike last year, the team had plenty of time to put the tournament together. Will explained: “For one thing, we have had a lot more time to organize it this year! Last year, we only had a month and a half to organise everything and this year we started planning in November.
We had a lot more time to perfect everything, go through all the processes, contact people with plenty of time. It’s been really good for us and has allowed us to build up our team as well.”
The event has been made possible by the efforts of students across the University, including some external team members. Will said: “It’s mostly university students that take part. On our team, we have a mix of students from different backgrounds – Audio Technology, Marketing, Media and Communications students.
We have around 30 to 40 staff that are working on the team, so it’s operating like a real-life event. We have a marketing department and media team who have worked behind the scenes to make content to promote the event as well.”
The event is just open to gaming fans however, as Will explains: “A lot of people who have worked on the team this year decided to get involved after finding out about the event that took place last year. You don’t even need to be necessarily interested in gaming, but if you’ve got an interest in helping at large events then we would definitely encourage you to reach out! It’s open to anyone outside the university as well, only certain roles need to be done by a GCU student if, for example, we are using university equipment.”
