Two GCU students have been selected to represent Team UK at WorldSkills Lyon 2024.

WorldSkills, known as the ‘skills Olympics’, is the largest international skills competition held every two years in cities around the world. The event will see 1500 young people from over 65 countries compete in 62 different technical skill disciplines from engineering, manufacturing and technology through to creative, digital and hospitality, all in front of an audience of 250,000.

Cyber Security & Networks student Finley Graham and 3D Animation and Visualisation student Yasmin George are set to take the global stage at the WorldSkills Lyon 2024 competition in September, alongside more than 30 teammates representing Team UK.

Finley, who will be competing in the IT Network Systems Administration category, is feeling nervous about the prospect of competing against other young people from across the world. The category will be included in the WorldSkills competiton for the first time since 2019.  They explained: “It feels a bit scary knowing that I'm going against the best of other countries, but I can't wait nonetheless.”

As part of the preparation, Finley will have to complete intensive training to ensure that they can work to a high standard during the competition.

With the competition only a month away, Finley wants to encourage other students to compete if they have the opportunity. They said: “It allows you to develop your skills to an international standard and proves to employers that you are able to meet those standards.”
