How GCU's Relax and Renew Space Encourages Reading to Boost Mental Wellbeing
Reading has been identified as one of the ways to effectively manage stress levels and improve mental wellbeing.
Commenting on the impact of reading on mental wellbeing, Glasgow Caledonian University Library Assistant, Julie Smith explained how the GCU Relax and Renew Space showcases the strong relationship between reading and mental wellbeing.
Smith said the Relax and Renew Space at the Sir Alex Ferguson Library exists to provide a safe place for students to read and improve their mental wellbeing.
“Mental wellbeing is about taking care of your mental health and using methods and supportive ways available to look after yourself,” she explained.
“Reading could be one way to support your mental wellbeing. It can offer a way to relax, distraction or escapism, even just getting away from burdens and things worrying or bothering you.”
“The Relax and Renew Space is not only for reading alone; it also provides space for students to support their wellbeing, relax, or have programmes that promote their wellbeing.
"It is not only for access to books; students use it for events like crafts or walk-and-talk events—so there are a lot of events happening at the space to allow you to relax and renew your mind.”
She added that students have given positive feedback about the space and also suggested what kind of events they want to do, what kind of events they would like to see at the space and other kinds of books they would like to read.
Lending credence to Smith’s comments, some GCU Students who consistently use the Relax and Renew space have acknowledged the relationship between what one reads and how it affects one’s mental wellbeing.
Meanwhile, the 2023 Annual Literacy Report has further reinforced the positive impact of reading on young people. According to the report, Children and young adults who read consistently reported feeling more relaxed, happy, and confident in performing their daily activities. This further highlights the power of reading to address challenges.
GCU's Relax and Renew Space exemplifies the University's commitment to student well-being. By creating a space that fosters reading and relaxation, GCU empowers students to take charge of their mental health and cultivate positive reading habits for a brighter future.
