John VP SCEBE
Newly appointed Vice President (SCEBE) John Mavileth

Newly appointed Vice President of the School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment John Mavileth has now started his post as Full Time Officer, after being elected in the 2022 Student’s Association elections.

We spoke to John about how it feels to be starting his new role and we even found out which celebrities he would invite to dinner – including some familiar political leaders!

How did it feel to get elected?

I really feel being elected gives me a second chance to represent my fellow mates and students as a whole and affect the changes students want to see at GCU.

What aspect of the role excites you the most?

Even if it's a personal competition, I have a good competitive edge. Winning excites and motivates me, whether it's taking issues and compliments from the students or providing students with very important information, that’s the KPIs I set up for myself. I motivate people to go ahead with teamwork. Engineering, innovation and entrepreneurship behaviour is what excites me and I want to develop the behaviour in everyone so that everyone can grow.

Is there anything in particular you want to achieve this year?

Working with the university to provide the best on-campus placements in Glasgow and hosting a conclave. Conclave fosters an environment that encourages innovation, inquisitiveness, and creativity. Conclave brings together industry and academic thinkers, innovators, and leaders to share their knowledge, skills, and research with aspiring professionals for GCU.

What will you bring to the role of VP?

Quality, careers, start-ups, innovation, and academic enhancement are the areas in which I am mostly investing my time. It doesn’t matter whether you study from London, New York, Oman, Bangladesh or Glasgow.

With the pandemic now at an end, how excited are you to see more students on campus this year?

Targeting to 100% on campus learning and giving students the opportunity to make their learning accessible from anywhere using virtual learning platforms.

Interesting fact about yourself...
