Newly formed Electronics Society hoping to spark interest in GCU community
A group of GCU students have come together to form a new society, with the aim to encourage students from all backgrounds to get involved.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering students decided to form the GCU Electronic Society as a way of learning about different electronic systems, whilst enhancing their employability in the process.
Second year student Peter Scheibenhoffer teamed up with fellow students to start the society and is excited to invite students from different disciplines to learn a new hobby. He said: “I have studied Electrical Power Engineering at Glasgow Kelvin College and during the topic selection for my Graded Unit, I first experienced using the software ‘Arduino’.
After I figured out that it is a very user-friendly development system in electronics, I have done my research and learned more about it. Since joining my course, I have met people who are also interested in this area and are willing to progress together.
The main goal is to help each other in different DIY projects related to IoT (Internet of Things), smart devices, and anything related to electronics. We all want to learn from and teach one another.”
Despite being a subject specific society, Peter and the rest of the society members want to encourage students from all backgrounds to get involved – whether they’re experienced in electronics or simply want to learn more. Peter is also developing a beginner’s guide for anyone who wants to learn about electronics for the first time.
He explained: “I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in this field and willing to do some extra-curricular activities outside of their course (even with no knowledge) to join our society because the benefits are endless; it’s an interesting hobby, looks good on a CV, helps improve your network and helps develop project management skills.
If you are interested and want to learn, our society is for you!"
