Pub quiz helps bring together podiatry students
The GCU Podiatry Society recently held an anatomy themed pub quiz to help different year groups socialise with each other.
20 students gathered at Bath Street’s Howlin’ Wolf on the 28th of February for the society’s first major event of 2024. Rebecca Hall was one of those in attendance and believes the quiz night was the perfect way for students to socialise and develop their knowledge around a crucial part of their degree.
“Anatomy had been something that we were all wanting to focus on across the different year groups,” explained Rebecca.
“It’s something you only really learn about in first year, but you need to know about anatomy for everything you do in podiatry. We’ve recently been learning about local anesthetics and you need to know your nerve anatomy down to a T because it’s used in everyday practice.
“We wanted to host something fun but also educational; I think it’s important for the society to have events like this to encourage students to learn away from the classroom.”
Students were separated into four teams and quizzed on a variety of different topics, including nerve anatomy, bones and muscles.
“Heather and Rosie from the society helped put the quiz together. Nancy, who graduated three or four years ago, also came in to run the quiz on the night with Heather.
“My team actually won, so that was an added bonus! It’s obviously all about the taking part at events like this and having that opportunity to socialise is so important. Sometimes sitting in the library isn’t that fun, so this was just something a bit different for the students.”
Rebecca, who’s currently in her second year, believes the BSc (Hons) Podiatry programme provides a welcoming environment for students from a variety of different backgrounds – something she hopes the society can help further develop.
“My year in particular are all really close – if you come to the Grab N’ Go then you’ll see us gathered round a couple of tables most lunchtimes!
“There’s a good mix of students across the different year groups. My year is a 50/50 split between school leavers and mature students. It’s funny that we all have different life experiences but get on so well with each other.”
With deadlines and exams just around the corner, Rebecca acknowledges that there may not be as much of an opportunity to socialise over the new few months but hopes the society can continue to build on the progress they’ve made throughout the academic year.
She said: “This is actually the first year since covid that the society’s been properly running. We’re still in that teething stage, but we’re definitely looking to host more events on over the next year and put a particular focus on encouraging students in first year to get involved.
“This is obviously quite a stressful time just now for students with coursework but we’re still looking for anyone interested to join us. We’re in a really strong position and it’s exciting to think about how we can continue to develop as a society.”
