GCU Built Environment Society and Podcast re-launches for Trimester B
The GCU Built Environment Society have re-launched after taking a short break, with members working hard behind the scenes to make sure the society is ready for Trimester B.
The society, which launched back in March 2021, is designed to connect students, graduates and industry professionals from the built environment industry. Members of the societyhave the opportunity to network, meet with successful figures from the industry and get access to opportunities from different built environment sectors.
Third year Construction Management student and Vice Chair-Person Nagineh Azar is excited about the re-launch, and welcomes anyone who is interested in the built environment to get involved. She said: “We decided to create the Built Environment Society to help connect students, graduates and professionals within the industry.
We don’t want to focus on a specific area of industry, but anything really related to construction and the built environment; including engineering, architecture, surveying, etc. The society is for people that are interested in those sectors and to help them learn more about them.”
Nagineh is hoping that the society will create opportunities that will help members learn more about the reality of the industry. She said: “It’s also a chance for people to speak to members of the industry who are already quite successful, because we often find that it can be sometimes difficult for students to access people like this. As a student, I personally find that it can be difficult to get a real insight into the industry, as opposed to what we get taught in our courses.”
Nagineh wants to encourage any student interested in the built environment sector to join – even if their programme isn’t necessarily related. She said: “The name of the society can make it seem like it’s just course based, but it’s definitely open to everyone!
Anyone who is interested the different sectors within the built environment are more than welcome to get involved. The goal is to connect people who are interested in those areas.”
As well as the society re-launch, Nagineh and fellow member Quantity Surveying student Joshua Foster are hosting the new and improved GCU Built Environment Podcast. Hoping to make the podcast more informal, Nagineh and Joshua are looking to invite students who are interested in speaking about built environment topics that interest them. She said: “This time, we wanted to make the podcasts a lot more personal and informal, so one week we may have an industry guest and another week we could have just me and Joshua speaking about topics that we’re interested in.
For example, we want to do one where we speak about diversity within the industry. Joshua is quite interested in the sustainability and the environmental side of things, so he can speak about that as part of the podcast.
We’re also keen to get some students along who would like to speak about specific subjects that they’re interested in or want to find out more about. We’re hoping that this more personal touch will help make it stand out a lot more.”
