Students from the Cyber Security & Networking programme have teamed up to re-launch the Cyber Blog, after starting the blog in 2019 to help people stay safe online.

As well as the Cyber Clinic, (created in 2019 to provide cyber advice to the public) students wanted to do more to raise awareness and educate the public about online safety. Working as a team, students have been given the opportunity to create engaging content to help make people more aware of cyber risks; in the form of written blogs.

4th year Cyber Security & Networks student Hannah McCartney decided to volunteer for the blog after being offered the opportunity to help start up the blog again. She said: “My good friend Kacper asked Jackie to revive the Cyber Blog and asked me to do it with him, so I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it.

I think there’s so many topics surrounding cyber security that are essential knowledge, e.g. how to keep children safe online. I hope to write some content that educates students and the general public how to do so.”

Students involved with the blog have the opportunity to create content around their studies, allowing them to contribute in their spare time. Hannah enjoys this relaxed approach, she explained: “The fun thing about the blog is that everyone has been given creative freedom. We made lists of all the topics we want to cover and were told to write about them and submit to the blog whenever we wish – so most members are just students writing in their free time. “

Hannah, who is also involved in the Cyber Clinic, believes that getting involved in extra-curricular activities like this can be really beneficial. She said: “Extra-curricular opportunities like this throughout the University are great for meeting people on your course and those with similar interests with you. Plus, it looks great on your CV!

It’s the perfect way to mix gaining experience for your degree with socialising with your friends.
