Journey to GCU – Joshua Foster
Here at GCU Student Life, we’re looking to showcase our diverse range of students with our brand new #JourneytoGCU campaign.
We’ll be focusing on the various routes students have taken to study with us here at our city centre campus, as well as finding out a bit more about them on a personal level.
We’re featuring Quantity Surveying student Joshua Foster, who joined GCU as a Direct Entrant in 2020:
What programme are you studying?
Full Time Quantity Surveying
Where are you from?
Glasgow, Cumbernauld, Scotland.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I was unsure of exactly what I wanted to be and usually jumped from idea to idea.
How did you come to study at GCU?
I was gifted the opportunity to study a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship and jumped at the chance. From there, I wanted to carry out the apprenticeship to its fullest and completed the optional Advanced Craft section within the programme. I wanted to advance my skillset so I enrolled within an evening HNC class studying Construction Management. After completing the HNC, I chose to study Quantity Surveying at GCU by gaining direct entry into second year of my programme.
What made you want to study your subject?
I explored the options for all of the courses that I was able to apply within the built environment. I decided to progress through the route of quantity surveying as I have aspirations to become a commercial manager/director and I believe having a strong background in cost analysis and practice would be best suited to this role.
What appealed to you about studying in Glasgow?
GCU is the only course in Glasgow that offers the course that I am studying. Further to this, I resonate with GCU’s saying of ‘University for the Common Good’.
Favourite thing about studying at GCU?
Sadly, I have not had the opportunity to be present on campus yet with the ongoing COVID struggle but from my experience within the University, my favourite part would be how open my lecturers were to helping answer any queries that myself or my classmates had.
