A GCU student has taken part in the annual Kiltwalk for the first time, after being encouraged to get involved by her lecturers.

MSc Environmental Management student Sabrina Lecam got on her walking shoes and tartan kilt to help fundraise for the Kiltwalk, a Scottish charity event which sees thousands of walkers raise money for their chosen charity by walking for a selected number of miles.

Sabrina decided to take part in this year’s Kiltwalk after being previously involved with outreach and public engagement activities and recognised how charity funds can support younger people.

Sabrina, who has recently moved to Scotland, saw this is a great opportunity to raise money for the GCU Foundation which will help support young people in Glasgow’s local communities. She said: “I didn't know of the Kiltwalk’s existence (I've only been in the UK for two months, no more, no less) one of my lecturers suggested that I should take part.

Given my continuous will to participate in public engagement activities and my aim to contribute to as many causes as I can, they suggested that I should try this traditional and peculiar way of raising funds in a kilt (my first time wearing one!).

She added: “I then made a lot of questions and found out that the funds would go to students whose lives had been affected by the pandemic, and are therefore struggling to keep up with their studies - whether mentally, physically or financially.

I know how hard is to face debt and payments, and I know that I'm lucky to have a job. So, what can I do if I can't raise enough myself? Walk a lot and bring this topic to light so the public can see the struggles of these students. My aim is £300 - let's hope I make it!”
