GCU Nursing Society returns in style

GCU’s Nursing Society has returned after a year hiatus – providing nursing students with additional support as well as kitting them out in their stylish new fleeces!

Students Natalie Elliot, Kimberley Brown, Nicole Hutcheson and Rebecca Hutton were keen to forge a sense of community within the nursing department and have planned events for the year ahead as well as selling fleeces to the next generation of nursing professionals here at GCU.

Second year Nursing (Adult) student Natalie explained why it was such a crucial time for the society to make a return.

She said: “This is the year of the International Nurse and Midwife, so now is the perfect time to bring back the society. Nurses do so much more than just taking orders from doctors and we all think it’s important that we get the message out there that this is such a wonderful, multi-faceted profession.”

Kimberley, who’s in her second year studying Nursing (Child), added: “We have a lot of mature students who have families and younger people who may have moved away from home. It’s really important that we provide that peer support as mental health is such a big issue nowadays – we want everyone to know they’re not alone.”

The society has sold more than 60 fleeces since January. Kimberley explained what makes them so special.

She said: “It’s obviously amazing for there to be such a demand, we’re absolutely delighted! Qualified nurses have fleeces as part of their uniform; however student nurses aren’t given them. So, it’s probably just a case of everyone wanting to keep warm, as the wards can get really cold.”

Natalie added: “We’re so proud to put on that uniform during placement. The fleeces look really smart and also show we’re from GCU - so I think it’s a great thing!”
