We’re bringing you directly into the world of GCU Student Life with our very own staff profiles.

You’ve watched our videos and read our articles, now it’s your chance to find out more about the team behind student communications at your University!

We start with the voice of GCU Student Life across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – our very own Rebecca Meechan.

What’s your job role?

"Student Communications Assistant."

Your favourite thing about working at GCU?

"My favourite thing about working at the University is meeting our students!

I know most staff say this but it’s true – getting to speak to people every day from all different countries, studying all different things is just so interesting. I could sit and listen to people talk about their life stories all day!

I also love being able to guide people at the University knowing I was once in their position at GCU, being unsure of so many things.

It’s such a nice feeling seeing the work you do guide somebody to where they’re supposed to be or inform them of important info that they wouldn’t have known about if it weren’t for our wee team."

What did you study at University?

"BA (Hons) Media and Communications at GCU – shout out to my class of 2017!"

Where else have you worked?

"My first part time job was at Go Outdoors. I worked in Lush on Buchanan Street in Glasgow for a few years too. I then worked at STV part time throughout university as a runner and researcher – then full time as a researcher/web producer for a year after graduating."

When I’m not working you’ll usually find me…

"Out a walk – I’m a bit obsessed with getting the steps in but aren’t we all? If I’m not walking I’ll be at a bar with my pals drinking an espresso martini – all about that balanced lifestyle right?!"

If I could be an animal, I’d be a….

"A shark. I love the sea and if I was going to live in it, I’d rather be one of the scarier fish that nobody will mess with/eat."

An interesting fact about myself…

"I once presented the boxing tournaments at The Commonwealth Games when the event came to Glasgow!

No – I was not in the ring haha. I worked with a sports presentation company and it was my job to get the crowd hyped before the matches started.

My role included conducting crowds at The Hydro to sing ‘Sweet Caroline’ on karaoke.. a bizarre moment in my career."

Who’s your favourite musician/band to listen to on your work commute?

"Drake never fails to get me motivated and in the zone ahead of a busy day in the office."

You’ve got a chilled night in – what’s your go-to film and snack choice?

"How can I possibly pick one go-to film?! Despite being a big Marvel fan.. my go-to has got to be A Star Is Born or Dirty Dancing. I will never EVER get tired of either of them."

Recommendation time -  your top Glasgow restaurant and bar?

"Oooh my fave place to eat & drink in Glasgow is Brel in the West End, it’s just so bloody cute.

And somewhere I’ve went recently for food that I’m desperate to go back to is Chakoo – a wee Indian tapas restaurant on St Vincent Street, absolutely unreal."

Morning person or night owl?

"Morning person!"

Staycation or vacation?

"Hmmm, I loves a beach too much - got to be a vacay."

Dining out or cooking in?

"Dining out, I cannot cook to save myself!"

Outdoor festival or sweaty indoor gig?

"Outdoor festival."
