Students revive GCU music scene through reformed GCU Audio Society
The GCU Audio Society has been brought to life by students, with plans to transform the Re:Union Bar & Grill into a music hotspot.
The GCU Audio Society was reformed at the start of 2024 after the society disbanded due to the pandemic.
Using their knowledge of live sound, members wanted to create a society where they could host music events on campus. “Being at university is totally different from college! For me, there weren’t as many opportunities for extra-curricular activities so it’s really exciting getting to come to GCU and have all of these great opportunity thrown at me.
Getting to start up the GCU Audio Society has been one of the biggest opportunities for me.” Explained GCU Audio Society President, Callum Lechatellier.
He added: “The idea to bring back the society actually came about when we were in Week 4 of Trimester A. I was sitting with my classmates, where I said ‘Guys, we really need to bring back the GCU Audio Society.’”
The society have plans to turn the GCU campus into a social music scene for the student community. Callum said: “The main objective is to revive the Re:Union Bar and make it a popular spot for students, especially in the evenings where there is scope to host events. We’re still trying to figure out what students would like to see at the Re:Union Bar, but we’re looking to research that.”
The society has a range of opportunities for students across the university to get involved with, Callum explains: “The other point of the society is to create a community for students in the Audio Technology course and with any other student who is interested in joining.
We’re also advertising the fact that we can help out other societies if they’re looking to host an event that requires any sound or visual support, which allows members to get specific event experience.”
We’re about to host our second event on March 15, which will be a St Patrick’s Day Weekend Party. So far, we have a singer song-writer and a band signed up to come play, but we’re still on the look-out for other bands to take part. If you’re in a band and looking to get involved, get in touch!”
For those studying Audio Technology, the society want to create opportunities to gain real industry experience. He said: “For students in the Audio Technology course, it gives them the chance to gain live sound and audiovisual experience. There will be the chance to gain experience in multiple areas across the Audio Technology industry so you’ll have something to add to your CV for when you graduate.
If you’re a non- Audio Technology student, there are many roles that you can choose from if you’d like to get involved. We do a lot of marketing, event management, advertising and social media so there’s a lot that you can do. If you have an interest in something and feel like you can contribute, then feel free to join.”
