Students travel to Barcelona for world largest digital design conference

OFFF Conference
The conference included a programme of inspiring talks, workshops, networking opportunity and visual exhibitions

Students from the Digital Design programme recently had the chance to expand their networks at the world’s largest digital design conference, which brings together creatives to celebrate visual and contemporary design.

Digital Design students were given the opportunity to attend the OFFF festival in Barcelona (4-6 April) which includes a programme of inspiring talks, workshops, networking opportunity and visual exhibitions.

One of the speakers included GCU Alumni of the Digital Design programme Ashleigh Robertson, who had the chance to speak about her career so far. Students from the programme were encouraged to attend in support of Ashleigh, as well as the opportunity to experience new insight into the creative design industry.

Students Cameron Hunter and David Beacham were amongst the students who attended the Spanish conference; an experience which they have both described as being an excellent opportunity.

David explained: “The conference took place over three days, showcasing contemporary visual creativity and design. Designers from all over the world attended this event as guest speakers, some freelance with others working within industry and big name brands.

Having the opportunity to attend the talks of these individuals was an amazing opportunity. It was interesting to learn about their design process and what inspired them to become designers. The conference also contained several workshops we could interact with alongside merchandise stalls and food vendors which was great.”

Cameron added: “To see how big companies like Sky Sports and Buck operate is always going to be beneficial. The conference allowed you to see so many individuals discuss different parts of their career and it helps to show that everything is achievable if you work for it. It also helped show that what you are doing isn't always for everyone but it is for someone. It was a great experience.”

The trip also allowed the students to fit in some sightseeing during their time in Barcelona. David said: “With the conference being held in Barcelona, it gave us the opportunity to explore the city in between the conference. I took a bus tour on one of the days which explored various landmarks throughout the city. It was an excellent trip!”

Now at the end of their degree, David and Cameron appreciate how opportunities like these are worth taking while you’re completing your studies.

“Opportunities like this aren’t given often so I knew I had to take it and I have no regrets.” Explained David.

“Looking back now, the trip as a whole was very informative and insightful. With the location of the trip set in Barcelona, this was a bonus as the weather was very nice.

As someone who is concluding their journey as a design student and looking for work, it was a very helpful insight into the journey of how these designers got from point A to B, as well as how they design and showcase their work.”
