A Radiotherapy and Oncology student is calling on the GCU Community to look after their skin this summer.

We spoke to third year Sharan Kaur as part of Sun Awareness Week, which takes place between the 1st and 7th of May,

The campaign is organised by the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and looks to raise awareness around sun protection and skin cancer.

Sharan wants everyone to realise the importance of taking a bit of extra care – especially over the next few months.

She said: “I think people associate sun cream with their holidays so they tend to be reluctant to use it at home.

“It’s about being sensible and also being aware. Even if you have a small mole, that can still progress into something cancerous – so always check your skin and don’t be afraid to ask your GP or dermatologist if you are in any doubt.”

Having recently completed a module on skin cancer as part of her coursework, Sharan is all too aware of the dangers of sun exposure.

She explained: “You hear a lot about breast cancer and prostate cancer, I don’t think you hear enough about skin cancer. It can affect males and females at different stages of their lives – it’s not just older people.

“A lot of people think there’s no sun in Scotland but we can still be exposed to it even when it’s cloudy. It’s important to remember the sun is still there even though you might not physically be able to see it.”

Sharan is encouraging staff and students to take a few simple steps this summer and help alleviate any potential risks.

She said: “It’s important to always be looking at protecting our skin, especially when the better weather comes around. Remember, foundation and moisturisers have SPF in them, so that will be a good first step in helping you.

“Look after your skin, wear sun-hats and protect your eyes with sunglasses. If you know you burn easily then make sure you put on plenty of lotion. Also, don’t forget to stay hydrated!”
