About us

The BEAM Research Centre was established in 2014 through the generous sponsorship of Jim Cochrane, an experienced international businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

The centre’s research focus is on maximising social, economic, and environmental benefits through the effective development, use and revitalisation of the built environment and engagement with the communities involved.

The centre’s Director is Professor Rohinton Emmanuel, and Deputy Director Professor Billy Hare, who are both Professors of Construction.

As a centre of international significance, BEAM recognises its responsibility to align its mission and activities with the scope and objectives of the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Many of the 17 goals are directly relevant to the work of the centre; including those relating to sustainable cities and communities; clean water and sanitation and industry, innovation, and Infrastructure.

The centre also acknowledges the built environment’s impact on the lives of those who work in and inhabit buildings. As such, BEAM activities will seek to align with innovative international standards, such as the Well Building Standard which encompasses air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.
