Master of Urban Climate and Sustainability (MUrCS)
Sustainable management of urban climate change is a vital need of the 21st Century and new professionals to lead this process are urgently needed. This 2 year Master programme, delivered by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) along with partner institutions in Finland and Spain, offer an ErasmusMundus Joint Masters giving graduates the founding to lead sustainable and climate sensitive urban change.
The aim of the MUrCS programme is to produce high calibre graduates with skills and knowledge to understand, assess and manage climate resilience in cities. The programme:
- develops a critical understanding of the complexity of urban sustainability and the need for local action to combat global climate change;
- offers several professional pathways in leading sustainable urban climate change adaptation/mitigation;
- enables you to operate in senior positions – in both the public and the private sectors – to lead sustainable and climate oriented planning;
- is open for both existing urban professionals as well as those with multidisciplinary environmental backgrounds.
The two-year course is based on a jointly developed curriculum by GCU, Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LAMK), Finland and University of Huelva (UHU), Spain. It leads to triple degrees – MSc in Sustainable Urban Environment (GCU), MEng Environmental Technology (Urban Sustainability) (LAMK) and MSc Environmental Technology (UHU).
Up to 20 fully funded students begin their education in Glasgow before spending their second semester in Finland. As the modules become more specialised, the third semester sees them based at the institution relevant to their specialism. They then undertake a thesis project, jointly supervised by two academics from different partner institutions in Semester 4.
We are in Intake 4, with plans to enrol 21 students in Sep 2021. The first intake of 15 graduated in November 2020 and the second intake will return back to GCU to complete their Master Thesis presentations and viva in Sep 2021. A further batch of students are about to commence their mobility in Finland next week (09 Aug). More details at
