The Moffat Centre at Glasgow Caledonian University was formed in 1998 following an initial endowment from The Moffat Charitable Trust. The Trust was set up by the late James H Moffat and his wife, Dr Margie Moffat OBE, the founders of the AT Mays travel agent chain which grew from a single operation in Saltcoats in the mid-1950s to become the third largest travel agency group in the UK, employing more than 2500 people.

The fund provides financial support to a wide variety of charitable causes and continues to provide support to the Moffat Centre and the Moffat Scholarship Awards.

Dr Jamie Moffat, the son of James H Moffat, plays an active role in the selection of Moffat Scholars. Each year, a number of scholarships worth £3,600 each are awarded to exceptional students studying the BA (Hons) International Tourism and Events Management course or the MSc International Tourism and Events Management course here at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Profits from the Moffat Centre are used to fund scholarships for students wishing to study Travel and Tourism.

Following more than a decade of support from The Moffat Charitable Trust, as well as project surpluses, the Moffat Centre has provided more than £500,000 worth of scholarships to Travel and Tourism, Event Management and Leisure students at GCU.
