Carol Bugge is a registered Adult and Sick Children’s Nurse and a Professor of Nursing in the School of Health and Life Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. Carol came from the University of Stirling to GCU in June 2022 to take up the post of Professor of Nursing.
Carol is a member of the Ageing Well Research Group (AWRG) with her work mainly contributing to the PELvIC floor And Continence (PELICAN) hub within the AWRG. Her research interests focus on women's health broadly and pelvic health more specifically. Carol has led a range of pelvic health studies including a large clinical trial (TOPSY), funded by NIHR.
Carol’s work often focuses on the perspectives of those receiving health interventions. For example, she led a large qualitative study of women's experiences of the OPAL intervention. OPAL aimed to understand if biofeedback-mediated pelvic floor muscle training was more effective than pelvic floor muscle training alone in improving symptoms of urinary incontinence in women. Carol has published over 40 papers in nursing, pelvic health and health services research journals.
As an experienced doctoral supervisor, Carol has supervised 12 doctorates to completion, across a range of nursing and AHP fields of practice. She has examined doctoral thesis in the UK and internationally.
Carol holds an Honorary Professor of Nursing position at the University of Stirling, UK.
