David trained in physiology at the University of Glasgow, then in physiotherapy at the University of Manchester, before undertaking a PhD at the University of Edinburgh on the physiological and mechanical influences on muscle function following lower limb surgery. He worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Edinburgh for 10 years before moving to Edinburgh Napier University as Lecturer and then Associate Professor of Physiotherapy. He joined Glasgow Caledonian in 2022 as a Reader in Musculoskeletal Heath and currently co-leads the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Health Research Group within the Research Centre for Health.
David has broad research interests in applied clinical sciences, outcome measurement and research methodology, though primarily he works in the orthopaedic and rehabilitative management of lower limb joint disease and injury. He has developed and delivered a portfolio of clinical trials and published over 100 scientific papers and book chapters. He currently supervises six doctoral projects across the breadth of musculoskeletal health, encompassing applied clinical science, kinematics, and data science.
He is Associate Journal Editor for research methodology at the Knee, sits on the executive committee of the British Orthopaedic Research Society and the CAHPR Scottish consortia, and has honorary fellowships in epidemiology at the University of Aberdeen University and in orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh.
