Derek is a Lecturer in HRM within the Department of Management and Human Resource Management at the Glasgow School for Business and Society.
He completed a thesis on ‘Emotion in Teaching: Developing an Understanding of the Emotional Side of Teaching Through the Importance of Context and Role Amongst Teachers and Classroom Assistants in Scottish Schools and continues to have an interest in both emotion and public sector reform.
He is currently in the process of publishing papers based on this thesis and is keen to continue researching within this and other related areas.
Derek teaches a range of different human resource management modules across all levels within the department.
Principal research interests are in emotional labour and related emotion theories, public sector reform/modernisation, employment relations, gender, wellbeing/burnout, school-based education and human resource management.
