Dirk studied and practised ophthalmic dispensing and optometry in Germany before obtaining a Master’s degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He came to Glasgow in 1999 when he joined the department as a research student to work with Prof Gordon Heron and Dr Lyle Gray on the dynamics of the human accommodation response. He completed his PhD in 2003 following which he was appointed as a lecturer teaching speciality clinics, physiological optics and contact lenses.
Dirk’s current research interests include changes in the quality of the retinal image before and after the onset of myopia, size and blur perception in different refractive groups and various aspects of the accommodation response with regard to retinal defocus and refractive error development.
