Dr Mahesh Uttamlal is a senior lecturer in Forensic Investigation at Glasgow Caledonian University. His research at GCU concerns the development of novel materials that exhibit both electrochemical and spectroscopic properties, for the preparation of fibre-optic chemical sensors. His work involves the synthesis and characterization of novel compounds which are then immobilised (electrochemically and photochemically) onto electrically conducting glass. To date, chemical sensors have been developed for pH, dissolved oxygen and calcium ions. Dr Uttamlal is involved in the School’s Forensic International Partnership programme, which links up California State University, Long Beach.
