Academic Development and Student Learning
Linda is Emeritus Professor of Digital Learning in the Department of Academic Quality and Development at Glasgow Caledonian University. Her experience relates to the strategic implementation of Digital Learning across the curriculum, underpinned by scholarship and research. The development of strategy and policy has been an important aspect of this, along with the professional development of staff.
Linda has designed, taught, and researched digital approaches to learning in higher education over many years and has published and presented her work nationally and internationally. Her research, which attracted European and UK funding, focused on networked learning, the impact of online communities, and the student experience of digital learning. Her publications include a co-authored book, 'Learning with Online and Mobile Technologies', which encourages students to make best use of technology to support their studies. She continues to review journal and conference papers, serve on editorial boards and evaluate grant proposals. Linda is an elected member of the ESRC Peer Review College, a reviewer for the Carnegie Trust and, by invitation, for the Irish Research Council. She is an experienced external examiner for masters and doctoral students.
Linda began her career as a teacher after gaining an MA in French and German from the University of Glasgow and postgraduate qualifications in both primary and secondary teaching from Strathclyde University. She took forward her interest in education and technology through completing an MSc (IT) at the University of Glasgow, following which she became a research fellow in learning technology there. She went on to develop her academic career as a lecturer, senior lecturer and professor at GCU, after having gained a PhD on ‘Networked Learning in a Social Action Context’.
Nationally, Linda has taken an active role in the UK’s Association for Learning Technology (ALT), helping to shape its direction on strategy, policy and processes as a former trustee, vice chair, chair and president. She co-founded the ALT-Scotland special interest group in 2012 which she co-chaired until 2018.The 2018 conference marked the 25th anniversary of ALT where Linda was awarded the association's highest honour, as she became an Honorary Life Member of the Association. She was a founding member of the Open Scotland forum which aims to explore the potential of open policy and practice to benefit all sectors of Scottish education. Linda is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
