Patricia Muñoz-Escalona is a Professor within the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment. Patricia specialises in materials and manufacturing. She received both BEng (Hons) in Materials Engineering and MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Simon Bolivar University, in Caracas-Venezuela, where she also taught for 22 years. She received her PhD in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Bath in England and MSc in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Strathclyde. She is also a researcher in the area of surface engineering, developing ceramic coatings through Tungsten Inert Gas techniques. In the past she was involved in the research areas of machining specifically in tool wear, surface roughness and the development of mathematical models for surface roughness and tool wear prediction.

She has taught and assessed at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of materials science, materials selection, manufacturing and biomaterials, as well as supervised undergraduate and postgraduate projects. She is also publishing in the area of engineering education and has implemented e-learning activities as part of her teaching approach and regularly reviews research papers in her field. She is a CEng, MIMechE, FIMMM and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
