I was appointed as a Lecturer in Biological Sciences within the Department of Life Sciences in October 2011. Before taking up my post at GCU I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow under Prof Peter Flatt at the Diabetes Research Group, University of Ulster, Northern Ireland from 2004 – 2011.
Research Interests
My research is focused in the area of diabetes and obesity and related degenerative diseases and includes:
- Investigations of the effects of nutrients, hormones and pharmacological agents on pancreatic islet cell function/dysfunction and secretion of islet hormones.
- Regulation and dysfunction of gut and islet hormone secretion/action in diabetes/obesity and effects of alterations following bariatric surgery or weight reduction.
- Analysis of the pharmacological effects of novel pharmaceutical compounds in vitro and in vivo using both diet-induced and transgenic animal models of diabetes/obesity.
- Role of steroid hormones in gut and pancreatic endocrine cell function and hormone secretion.
