Dr Suzanne Hagan is a senior lecturer in Vision Sciences. Suzanne studied Biochemistry at UG level and undertook her PhD at the University of Liverpool, on proliferative vitreoretinal disease. After five years working in cancer research at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, Suzanne joined Glasgow Caledonian University.
In 2010, Suzanne was appointed as a lecturer in Vision Sciences, and her undergraduate teaching includes ophthalmic anatomy and pathology and ocular/systemic disease. She is the Postgraduate Tutor for the department of Vision Sciences and is Module Lead of the MSc IOVR Research Projects and of the Final Year Optometry/Orthoptics BSc Hons projects. Suzanne became a senior lecturer in 2019.
In addition to her academic and teaching role at GCU, Suzanne has ongoing collaborations with the IOBA Eye Institute at the University of Valladolid, Spain. She is also a member of the global Tear Research Network.
Suzanne is also a member of various professional organisations, such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), the Biochemical Society and the British Society of Cell Biology (BSCB).
Suzanne’s research focuses on the biological mechanisms underlying anterior eye conditions, including dry eye disease (DED) and in identifying novel tear fluid biomarkers of neurological and of systemic diseases, such as diabetes.
Suzanne has supervised 4 PhD students to completion and is currently supervising 3 PhD students.
